The ACA reformed the insurance industry to make quality, affordable insurance more accessible. It created minimum benefit requirements, prohibited discrimination based on health history or gender, and allowed dependents to stay on parents' insurance until age 26.
Medicare has an AEP - Annual Enrollment Period, which is from October 15 to December 7.
ACA marketplace has open enrollment - Nov 1 - Jan 15th. Both plans have special enrollment periods outside of this window which are available based on qualifying life events such as marriage, birth/adoption, divorce with coverage loss, death, moving, or loss of existing coverage.
Medicare is made up of several parts:
- Part A – Hospital Insurance: covers inpatient hospital stays, care in skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Part B – Medical Insurance: covers doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies (like wheelchairs and walkers), and preventive services such as wellness visits.
- Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage: helps cover the cost of prescription medications.
- Plan C – Medicare Advantage: Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. These plans often include Part A, Part B, and sometimes Part D. They may also offer additional benefits like dental or vision. Types of Advantage plans include HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations) and PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations).
- Medigap – Medicare Supplement Insurance): Medigap policies help cover out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles (excluding the Part B deductible). These plans are also offered by private insurers and work alongside your Medicare benefits to reduce personal healthcare costs.
